Letter from the Austrian Minister of Education, Heinrich Drimmel, to architect Josef Hoffmann, appointing Hoffmann to be the Austrian Commissioner for the 28th Venice Biennale, dated 2nd February, 1956 (Archive Kargl, Vienna)

Initiated by commissioner Jasper Sharp and parallel to the exhibition presented in the Austrian Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale, extensive research has being conducted into the history of Austria’s participations at the Biennale from 1895 to the present day.

Documents including photographs, correspondence, architectural plans, exhibition checklists, catalogues and press reviews, housed in private and public archives in Austria, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, the USA and elsewhere, are being gathered together and organised into a single, chronological archive.

Many of these documents were publishes in the landmark publication, ‘Austria and the Venice Biennale, 1895–2013’, which was presented at the Secession in Vienna in April 2013. Since fall of the same year, the book has been sold out.
At the beginning of 2014, the book was awarded a prize as one of Austria's most beautiful books of 2013: "Die schönsten Bücher Österreichs 2013".

This website provides, for the first time, a complete chronology of all artists that have represented Austria since 1895. The archive itself will be made publicly accessible in the near future.
